I was focusing on a Green Heron at Baldwin Lake in Arcadia, CA when this male Hooded Merganser popped up from under a snag just off to my left. Thankfully he passed in front of me for a few seconds while trying to get his catch under control before swimming away.
They need to remove the claws before swallowing the crayfish whole or risk damaging their internal organs.
