Short-eared surprise

February 6, 2025

While photographing Bald Eagles on the shore of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, NY I struck up a conversation with another photographer and he gave me a tip. Short-eared owls were wintering in Avon, NY and hunting in some farmlands where they could be seen from the road. I still had another night in my hotel room in Syracuse, so it was a little inconvenient to make the hour and a half drive back towards home to Avon, and then back to Syracuse, but I didn’t want to pass up the chance and I wouldn’t have time the next afternoon. Plus the weather was about to turn bad the next day with heavy snow forecast so I decided to add on another three hours of driving that afternoon. Fortunately I found the Owls and was able to get some decent shots.
