A work in progress

August 8, 2022

Every summer I try to improve on the Ruby-throated Hummingbird photographs I get in the yard. Lately I’ve been concentrating more on perched images as opposed to in flights. Mostly because I’ve spoiled the birds and they only want to fly around the feeders instead of the flowers. So lately I’ve been trying to get closer by using my hide and paying utmost attention to the backgrounds and camera angles.

This Lilac tree branch is a natural perch that the male has claimed as his own. Hummingbirds are very territorial and he chases away any other bird that gets close. I’ve just trimmed away any distracting branches that don’t add to the composition but hopefully left enough surrounding vegetation to keep things looking natural. Here’s my latest attempt.
