These birds are a common sight, and source of noise, all around the Los Angeles area. There’s no definitive answer as to how they got here but experts agree they most likely ended up in Los Angeles through the pet trade, either released intentionally or pets that escaped. Red-crowned parrots are listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as endangered, and they’re actually thriving better here than in their native habitat in Mexico. They often travel in large groups and perch high in treetops, at least when I’ve seen them. Also very noisy. I finally managed to get a decent look at some on my last visit to the area.
