Four seasons in one day

November 17, 2025

We arrived at Bryce Canyon around three in the afternoon. My plan was to get in a sunset shoot, try my hand at astro photography that evening (very limited success) , and then a sunrise shoot before heading towards our final destination in Southern California. The sunset never really materialized that evening but it mattered little in this gorgeous National Park.

I woke well before sunrise the next day, packed up my gear, and headed out for the five minute walk from our cabin to the rim of the canyon. I was met with darkness, gloom, and pouring rain. Feeling pretty lazy and disappointed, I simply went back to bed. I wasn’t lying there even five minutes till the thoughts started going through my head; “what if the rain stops ? What if the sun breaks through ?” So off I went in full rain gear, heading towards the rim in darkness and rain.

I did the best I could shooting around the raindrops and it wasn’t long after what must have been sunrise, that the rain stopped and a pretty fog began to drift through the canyon making for a nice atmosphere. But that soon ended as the fog got so heavy I could barely see the rock formations in front of me and a drizzle started again. At this point it was close to checkout time so I headed back to the cabin to start packing. We stopped at a little cafe inside the park to grab a coffee and a breakfast sandwich before hitting the road. And just like that, the rain turned to beautiful snow falling in the forest all around us. Sitting in that cafe with only a few other park goers present, and watching the two employees going back and forth to the window to check on the snowfall just felt magical.

So with Nancy in the car with the heater running, I made it out to two other lookouts and was just overwhelmed by the beauty of fresh snow falling on this wonderful canyon.
