I took these pictures in fall of 2020 on the Langford pond. Double-crested Cormorants are the most widespread and common of the species. These birds have the ability to submerge their whole body while swimming where only their head and neck are visible. They are very strong swimmers and dive to catch small fish. A sharp hook on the end of the bill assists them in grasping and holding their prey. After a few dives they will usually find a sunny spot to stretch their wings and dry off. These birds are extremely quick in flight. The only way I was able to track this bird was being fortunate enough to catch him as he took off.
