I spent one evening and one morning photographing Elk in Benezette PA. The population of approximately 1200 animals is dispersed over 400 square miles so finding them in the right light, with a pleasing backdrop, and close enough is a hit or miss proposition. I missed more than I hit spending two hours at a location I was hoping to see them, beginning a half hour before sunrise, and coming up empty. The rut begins around Labor Day and continues till about the end of October so these magnificent bulls are very active this time of year.
